Janine Grosche develops translucent latex skins from natural liquid latex through a process of moulding, brush- casting, imprinting and surface experimentation.

Janine Grosche’s latex skins are developed from natural liquid latex through an experimental material practice refined over several years.

Beginning in liquid form rather than commercially produced latex sheeting, each skin is individually developed by hand. Variations in translucency, surface and structure give each piece its own material character.

The resulting membranes exist somewhere between textile and skin — thin, tactile and flexible, yet capable of becoming structural and self-supporting.

TRANSLUCENT SNAKE SKIN LATEX

One of Janine Grosche’s central material developments is a translucent latex skin with a moulded snake-skin surface. Developed from natural liquid latex, the material combines an intricate organic texture with unusual translucency, allowing light, colour and the body beneath to remain visible.

Each skin is individually developed and handcrafted, resulting in subtle variations in texture, tone and transparency. Rather than conventional latex sheeting, the material exists as a distinctive surface in its own right, forming the basis for garments, body-centred pieces and experimental constructions.

TRANSLUCENT LATEX LEATHER / SCULPTURAL SKINS

Developed from natural liquid latex, these firmer, leather-like skins hold shape and structure while retaining the distinctive tactile qualities of latex.

Unlike commercially available latex materials, each skin is individually developed within PATH and distinguished by its unusual combination of translucency, thinness and structural strength.

They form the basis for sculptural garments and body-centred constructions, allowing the material to move beyond a conventional textile into wearable, self-supporting forms.

An evolving archive of individually developed latex skins explores variations in translucency, colour, surface and structure. Each material study forms part of Janine Grosche’s ongoing research into the possibilities of natural liquid latex and its transformation into skin-like surfaces.

FROM MATERIAL TO FORM

The material research extends directly into Janine Grosche’s sculptural and wearable practice. Translucent latex skins are shaped into garments, body-cast structures and self-supporting forms that retain the visual delicacy of a membrane while creating volume and structure around the body.

Each application is developed in response to the material itself, exploring the space between skin, garment and sculptural object.
